Intent

At Holy Trinity School, we value Art and Design as an integral part of a child’s entitlement to a broad, balanced and interesting curriculum. Art and Design provides our children with opportunities to develop and extend skills and the chance to creatively express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas across a range of mediums. Our curriculum has been designed to expose learners to a variety of different artists and designers from a range of cultures, communities and historical periods.

Implementation

The key skills that the curriculum promotes are built upon from EYFS and through KS1 and KS2. The expectations and outcomes become progressively more sophisticated and challenging as time goes on. During their time at Holy Trinity School, a child will have exposure to high-quality work of a diverse range of well-known artists and designers from different communities through which they will utilise, develop and practise the following skills:

The school values of Love, Aspiration and Community are promoted through many opportunities such as our whole school ‘Arts Week’ which further explores a range of styles and techniques.

At Holy Trinity School we utilise sketch books from Reception to Year 6 to provide children with a space to practise and experiment with ideas and techniques prior to embarking on final pieces. Sketch books also allow children to look back and evaluate their own personal progress.

Impact

The Art and Design curriculum develops the children’s awareness and love of The Arts. Children’s work is displayed around the school and extra curricular competitions allow further exploration while also raising the profile of the subject within our school community. We encourage children to express themselves creatively and also provide them with artistic vocabulary to better articulate their thoughts and feelings about art.

It is our aspiration that the skills and knowledge that children acquire in Art and Design, paired with a love and enjoyment of The Arts, will remain with our learners long after they leave Holy Trinity School community, allowing them to explore these avenues in the future either as career options or for their own personal enjoyment.
